Phil Davis made a splash in the light heavyweight division rankings Saturday night, stunning Lyoto Machida and scoring a decision victory at UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie.
Davis, with the win, will likely move up the ladder and closer to a title shot.
His current training partner at Alliance MMA in California, Alexander Gustafsson, is the next contender to the belt. “The Mauler” faces Jon Jones next month at UFC 165: Jones vs. Gustafsson.
So, if Gustafsson earns the belt, and Davis is paired to compete for it, will they fight?
“Yes,” said Davis, the only man to defeat Gustafsson to date. “We discussed this. We have the attitude that iron sharpens iron. I helped him with his wrestling and he’s helped me with my overall game.”
Davis’ win over Machida was his first vs. an ex-UFC champion. His only loss came at the hands of Rashad Evans last year.
