The decision rendered by the judges at UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie in the Lyoto Machida-Phil Davis fight shocked many, including several fighters.
Davis was awarded the unanimous decision triumph thanks to successful takedowns at the end of the first and second rounds. Machida, a former UFC champion, landed a nice flurry that appeared to have “Mr. Wonderful” dazed for a brief moment.
“Round 1 takedown won the fight,” said Daniel Cormier, who was part of the FUEL TV pre- and post-fight broadcast. “It was takedown vs. that one flurry. Close fight.”
Tim Kennedy posted “I thought (Machida) won that fight. He landed more significant strikes.”
Bellator champion and fellow former NCAA wrestling standout Ben Askren tweeted out “Sweet! Congrats. 1 and 2 were super close, good for him.”
And finally, UFC president Dana White chimed in, stating, “Wow!!! I had Machida winning all 3 rds but that’s what happens when u leave it up to the judges!”
