Bellator 97 saw Ben Askren successfully defend his welterweight championship. Post-fight, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney broke the news that Askren fulfilled his contract.
While Askren could resign with Bellator there are other options. He’s still under a waiting period for Bellator, so time will tell. When former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez finished his Bellator contract, he tried to join the UFC but has been unsuccessful and in a court battle since January.
On Wednesday night, Askren earned his fourth title defense against Andrey Koreshkov with a fourth round stoppage. He’s 12-0 with most of those fights occurring for Bellator. Three of those fights he stopped. There’s no word on what move is next for Askren.
Bellator 97 was July 31 from the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, NM.
