Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal was caught off guard when Emanuel Newton hit a spinning backfist to remove him from Bellator’s Season 8 light heavyweight tournament.
“When I land a punch, I know it’s over,” said Lawal to MMA Weekly. “I’m looking where I’m throwing. I don’t throw it to hope it lands. I’m throwing it to land and for it to land solid. I’m watching everything I throw. He had that spinning backfist and he got lucky with it. When we fight again, it will be a different story, trust me. I know it will.”
It was in the semifinals when Newton connected with the shot in the opening round. He’s since made it to the finals of the 2013 Summer Series. At Bellator 97, he takes on Jacob Noe on July 31.
Newton is expected to get his title shot during 2013.
Lawal is 10-2 and a former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion.
