Ed Herman vs. Trevor Smith

The lone middleweight fight on the card takes to the cage next, as Ed Herman (20-9) tries to rebound from a loss to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza by welcoming Trevor Smith (10-3) to the UFC. Smith has lost two of his last three overall. Herb Dean is the assigned referee.

Round 1: Washington-born fighters take to the Octagon, as Herman fires off a nasty left-hook. Smith clinches and Herman lands some uppercuts to gain the advantage. Smith using big knees to the body, and fires off a nasty left. Herman, though, throws his own left that wobbles Smith. Herman’s unable to capitalize, and Smith appears to have his bearings back. Smith wobbles Herman with his own strike, but isn’t able to put anything together, either. Some real, nice, crisp striking from these two. Three straight rights from Herman force Smith to cover up, and he does, coming back with his own attack. Herman gains the upper-hand, bloodying the left eye of Smith as the rounds ends.

Round 2: Big head kick starts off the round, and Herman is able to gain control on the mat. However, just as Herman gets to his feet, Smith fires off a kick that connects. Smith denied on a hip toss, and Herman scores with a left. Little slower pace after that crazy opening five minutes of action. Herman complains of an eye poke, and Smith tells him it was a punch, not a finger. Smith scores with a takedown as we head under two minutes in this round. Herman back up before any damage can be inflicted. Herman throws a knee, slips, but scores with a takedown as the round comes to an end.

Round 3: The crowd greets them at the start of the round, and Smith lands an inside leg kick. That allows Herman a chance for a takedown, which he does and scores, but leaves his neck exposed and Smith has a guillotine locked for a brief moment. Herman breaks free and is working for a head-and-arm choke. Smith gets out and we are back to the feet. Low blow gives us a break in the action. Smith eats a punch to land two of his own with a minute left. Exchange of knees inside the clinch, and Herman back to the uppercuts from in tight.
