Ben Askren has dominated the welterweight division in Bellator since he took the gold in 2010. While the former NCAA wrestling champion has been winning, most came via decision. That left fans asking for more finishes out of Askren.
“People are going to think what they want, but it’s never going to affect me,” said Askren to Sherdog. “They’re just fans. It’s not like it’s my coach. If my coach says something, I’m going to listen to my coach, right? But they’re fans, so who cares what they think? I’m doing my thing and getting better. I never let what people say affect me in the least bit.”
After racking six straight decisions for the promotion, Askren finished Karl Amoussou at Bellator 86. The doctor called the fight before the championship rounds began as Amoussou’s eye was swollen shut. The win improved Askren to 11-0 with the last eight coming from Bellator. His next title defense comes from Russia’s Andrey Koreshkov.
Koreshkov is undefeated with 13 wins and five coming from Bellator. He won the Season 7 welterweight tournament, last taking a decision on Lyman Good.
Bellator 97 is July 31 from the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, NM. The main card airs live on Spike TV.
