Renan Barao is somewhere at the top of the UFC’s bantamweight division. As the interim champion, Barao’s considered number one or two with Dominick Cruz right up there. Barao thinks he’s the real champion since Cruz hasn’t fought in nearly two years.
“I consider myself the champion,” said Barao to Fighters Only. “It’s me who is training, fighting, defending the belt, not him.”
Cruz has no return date since an ACL tear and failed operation.
Barao won the interim belt in July of last year and defended against Michael McDonald in February. He returns from an injury as he meets Eddie Wineland.
Wineland took a pair of wins in 2012 to go 2-2 for the UFC.
They’re the co-main event of UFC 165. It’s September 21 from the Air Canada Centre.
