Phil Davis figures a win over Lyoto Machida could be the one that lands him the next UFC light heavyweight title shot. Machida had been considered a potential No. 1 contender for close to a year.
“I know what I’m willing to do to make it happen,” said Davis. “Machida was next in line for a title shot. Wining against him will put me up in the contender race. My plan is to go back to Rio and get another submission win and be able to build my legacy that way.”
This year, Davis has taken a win over Vinny Magalhaes to improve to 11-1. His only loss came from Rashad Evans.
Machida has taken a pair of wins since dropping the bet. He took a split-decision over veteran Dan Henderson in February.
They’re the co-main event of UFC 163. It’s from Brazil’s HSBC Arena on August 3.
