Former UFC welterweight No. 1 contender Thiago Alves has undergone his fourth surgery, and believes he deserves a new nickname.
Alves was expected to face Matt Brown in August at UFC on FOX: Shogun vs. Sonnen, but a biceps injury forced him off the card.
“That’s surgery 4 in a year,” Alves posted on Twitter Thursday following the operation. “You can call me the bionic Pitbull! Now the recovery starts.”
The 29-year-old is 19-9 in his career, but just 2-4 since securing his shot at Georges St-Pierre in 2009. He has not fought since March of last year when Martin Kampmann defeated him via submission.
