Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren and No. 1 contender Andrey Koreshkov share similarities as they’re undefeated in MMA and hold gold medals in other hand-to-hand combat sports. Though they have similar backgrounds, Koreshkov is ready for the wrestler in Askren.
“Ben Askren has never faced a challenge like me,” said Koreshkov to MMA Junkie. “He’s never faced anyone with my standup skills and game off my back and my ability to get up. He has no idea what he is in for later this month.”
Koreshkov took two Bellator wins before entering and winning their season 7 welterweight tournament. He defeated Lyman Good in the finals.
Askren, a four-time Division I wrestling All-American, has three title defenses since taking the belt. He took care of Karl Amoussou when the doctor waived the fight due to a swollen eye.
They have been placed as the co-main event of Bellator 97, which takes place July 31. It comes from the Santa Ana Center in Albuquerque, NM with the main card airing live on Spike TV.
