In Lyoto Machida’s last match, he was criticized for his lack of engagement in the split-decision win over Dan Henderson. “The Dragon” will need a new strategy if he wants to finish Phil Davis.
“He needs to come after me,” said Davis to BJPENN.com. “His best opportunity is to come after me. Sitting back and just waiting for things to happen, that’s just not a winning strategy right now. He thinks he can squeak by with a close decision like he did with Dan Hendo. I’m not going to let that happen again.”
Both are closing in on the No. 1 contender status in the light heavyweight division and are ranked in the Top 10.
Davis is 11-1 with a pair of wins. Rashad Evans has been the only person to stop “Mr. Wonderful.”
Machida dropped the belt in 2011 and he’s taken two straight wins since last summer. They came from Henderson at UFC 157 and Ryan Bader at UFC on FOX 4.
They’re the co-main event of UFC 163 on August 3. It comes from Brazil’s HSBC Arena.
