Phil Baroni was promised a shot at the inaugural ONE FC welterweight title if he could defeat Nobutatsu Suzuki at their latest show. Not only did Baroni loss, but it came after tearing a ligament in his right foot.
“I knew right away,” said Baroni to MMA Fighting. “I was so close. I could taste it. I knew if I beat that guy, I was getting the fight. I’ve been dreaming my whole career for that fight.”
The former UFC fighter was originally diagnosed with a year on the sides, though the 37-year-old opted for a different route that requires six to nine months.
The loss dropped him to 2-7 since 2009. He’s now 1-2 under the ONE FC name with a win over Rodrigo Ribeiro. Baroni’s injury occurred at ONE FC: Rise to Power on May 31.
