Chris Weidman was expecting to have former UFC champion Matt Serra in his corner for his middleweight championship shot, but that role will go to the challenger’s father.
Serra noted health issues and the recent birth of his third child for having to miss the bout with Anderson Silva.
“I’ll miss Matt, he kind of rounds me out as a coach,” said trainer Ray Longo to MMA Fighting. “It was a hard decision for him to have to make, but sometimes family has to come first.”
A few months back, Serra went under the knife to have a rib removed. It was restricting blood flow and could have caused a blot clot.
Weidman will look to not only take the belt from Silva, but hand him his first UFC loss. Silva has 16 UFC wins to his name.
