At UFC 162 next month, Chris Weidman is scheduled to face the consensus number 1 pound for pound mixed martial artist in the world, UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva. While Silva is the obvious favorite going in to the event, he’s not as heavy a favorite as he has been in recent bouts. Some Las Vegas casinos having Silva around -270 while Weidman is holding steady and strong at +230.
The Vegas bookies have seem to think that Weidman has a better chance of dethroning the current champion than any of his predecessors. Surprisingly enough, they’re not the only ones. It appears as if even some professional fighters are agreeing with that notion, everyone from Gray Maynard to Georges St Pierrer and now Roger Gracie.
MMAMania.com picked up the quick quote from Gracie’s interview with ESPN.com saying “I think [Weidman] is very, very dangerous. His grappling is at a very high level. He can submit any world-class grappler. I think he’s really that good. He can tap anyone, even me. It’s just a matter of if he can put Anderson in those situations. I would still put my money on Anderson but I think Chris Weidman is dangerous and can surprise him.”
UFC 162 is set to go down on July 6th, 2013 and will emanate from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is set to coincide with the UFC’s annual Fight Week which includes this years UFC Fan Expo. Here is the interview in its entirety.
