When the WEC was still around, Urijah Faber was the top dog of their featherweight division for some time. He was able to defend the belt five times in less than two years. During that winning streak, he was able to hand Dominick Cruz his only career loss with a quick submission.
Since that loss, Cruz has been unstoppable as the UFC bantamweight champion. One of his wins came by defending the belt against Faber.
Faber has jumped between the featherweight and bantamweight division since he joined the UFC. He’s left the victor several times, but can’t secure the gold when it’s up for grabs.
Cruz was quick to take notice of Faber’s inability to win when it matters most.
“I’m one of two people to ever keep Faber from becoming a UFC champion,” said Cruz to Bleacher Report. “He will forever be known as the former WEC champion. He will always be a number one contender and never anything more.”
It’s a bold statement from Cruz who is 19-1, with Faber being the lone blemish. Unfortunately for Cruz, he hasn’t stepped inside the Octagon since October 2011. He’s currently healing from his second ACL surgery as the first was deemed a failure. There is no date for when Cruz will return, if he does.
Faber takes on Yuri Alcantara at UFC on FS1 1 on August 17. It comes from the TD Garden in Boston, MA with the bantamweights expected for the main card.
