Mitch Clarke held back tears at his UFC 161 post-fight interview. He was 0-2 for the UFC and looking for his first win since April 2011. Clarke was able to go the distance with John Maguire for the decision win.
“Last time I came up short and the UFC kept me around,” said Clarke to MMA Fighting. “This was redemption. After my last fight everything fell apart in my life and I had to rebuild everything from scratch. This win was so many years in the process. So many people counted me out. I’m just happy to get this win.”
Following his July 2012 loss, Clarke had knee and eye surgery. Clarke fell on difficult times as he rehabbed his knee with uncertainty if the UFC would keep him around. At the same time, his longtime girlfriend left him and he had nowhere to live.
Clarke thanked the UFC for keeping him and wished Maguire the best. Maguire is now 2-3 for the UFC, losing three straight.
The two fought on the preliminary card of UFC 161 with their bout airing on Facebook. The show came from Canada’s MTS Centre.
