MMA In New York Weekly Update – 6.14.13

Since it’s that time of the year when the struggle to get the sport sanctioned in New York becomes a recurring news item, it makes sense to have a weekly update post. So here it is! This week, things are looking grim. Pretty damn grim.

• There are only a few days left in the State Assembly’s legislative session, and though anything can happen when it comes to politics, thanks to 35 Assembly Democrats and a letter to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver coming out against the sanctioning of MMA, the situation appears bleak. Apparently, bills rarely get introduced to the floor for a vote if they don’t have enough party support to pass, and simple math has that 35 killing our hopes for another year.

Efforts to legalize mixed martial arts in New York faces a tough fight. Um, yeah.

• Here’s Mark LaMonica of Newsday reminding us that we’re running out of time. Thanks, Mark.

• Even Shaquille O’Neal thinks MMA should be sanctioned in New York.

• Here’s a nice, well-researched piece on MMA in New York by Columbia University j-school grad Dina Abdel-Haq. Anything that takes into account the underground scene here definitely has my attention.
