Eddie Wineland was weeks away from a shot at interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao. An injury to the champion ended those title hopes, at least for the moment.
Now, Wineland hopes that when current champion Dominick Cruz returns, it doesn’t spoil what was set in place.
“Worst case would be that they come back at the same time,” said Wineland to MMA Junkie. “Then they have to fight to unify the belt. If that’s the case, then I guess I’ll have to fight just to justify my spot. It’s a hurry-up-and-wait kind of thing I guess.”
Barao was named the interim champion when Cruz suffered an ACL tear. The first surgery didn’t take and Cruz has been on the sides since October 2011 with no return date.
Wineland was removed from the UFC 161 card when Barao got hurt. There is no information on the returns of Wineland, Barao and Cruz.
