The UFC returns to Brazil Saturday night with UFC on FUEL TV: Nogueira vs. Werdum. In the main event, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira takes on Fabricio Werdum.
The bout is a rematch of a previous meeting won by Nogueira while both men were in PRIDE. Werdum, though, is currently ranked several spots ahead of “Minotauro” in the latest UFC rankings, and is hopeful a win will provide him a future title shot.
And, as a reminder, we will have complete coverage of the entire card beginning with the Facebook prelims Saturday afternoon.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Fabricio Werdum
Dana Becker: You’ve gotta give it to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, as the Brazilian appears to be an ageless wonder. He’s rebounded from some tough losses and remains right in the thick of the UFC heavyweight title hunt. A second win over Fabricio Werdum, in fact, could vault him near the top. However, this is no ordinary foe standing in front of him; this is the new Fabricio Werdum. Following some impressive wins in Strikeforce, Werdum has returned with a vengeance, defeating Roy Nelson and placing himself in the top-half of the rankings. While Nogueira will be the crowd favorite, Werdum won’t be bothered by that at all. Fabricio Werdum via first round submission (armbar)
Joseph Lisnow: Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum are two of the best Brazilian heavyweights out there. I think this one comes down to durability. Nogueira has been in some wars and has the scars to prove it. Werdum is on the verge of a title shot. If he picks up this win, a No. 1 contender fight should be next. I’m rooting for Nogueira because he’s a warrior in the sport and doesn’t get the proper credit he deserves. Unless Nogueira can get a solid grip of a limb on the ground, Werdum should be able to take the knockout. Fabricio Werdum via third round KO (punches)
