Wednesday is here and with it has come a flood of big news in the world of MMA. Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson is now a part of Bellator, Chael Sonnen and Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua will be headlining the UFC’s debut on Fox Sports 1, and Benson Henderson vs TJ Grant are set to throw down for the UFC lightweight title. Plus, we’ve got the scoop on Brazilian jiu-jitsu adept Robert Drysdale and his entry into the UFC. There’s no time to waste, so let’s get to it:
• ‘Rampage’ has officially left the UFC and will be joining Bellator and professional wrestling brand TNA, in a cross-promotional deal similar to what Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal received last year. Jackson vs Lawal is a fight that some fans have wanted to see for some time, but Bellator may first want to ease Jackson into things with a warm-up fight.
• A fight between Sonnen and Rua may have failed to materialize at UFC 161, but the pair is now set to headline the UFC’s inaugural show on Fox Sports 1. Neither guy is within range of a title shot, but this is a cool fight nonetheless and should be a stellar way to cap off what is shaping up to be a very stacked card.
• Henderson and Grant are now scheduled to meet at UFC 164, which takes place at the end of August. It’s hard not to be excited for this one; Henderson is very technically sound and polished, but Grant has looked better every time we’ve seen him fight at 155 pounds.
• Drysdale is royalty in grappling circles, having earned his stripes at both ADCC and Mundials. And after accruing a 6-0 mark in MMA, he’s the newest addition to the UFC’s light-heavyweight division. We can expect Drysdale to have an advantage on the ground against almost everyone at 205 pounds, though we’ll have to wait and see if the rest of his skill set is developed enough for the highest level.
