Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Lyoto Machida, Phil Davis: The Morning News Roundup – 6.4.13

Tuesday is here and we’re batting two out of three on major fight announcements. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has been pulled off of UFC 161, but don’t be too bummed, because Lyoto Machida is going to fight Phil Davis and Carlos Condit will be rematching Martin Kampmann. Plus, we’ve got a top ten list of MMA conspiracy theories (courtesy of Middle Easy) that will no doubt make your head spin. Here goes:

• The UFC announced that Rua’s next appearance will be rescheduled to a later event. “Shogun” was left without an opponent after Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was forced out of their planned bout due to injury, and a last ditch effort to sub in Chael Sonnen as a replacement fell through. We look forward to seeing Rua back soon (and Nogueira as well).

• Machida vs Davis has been slated for UFC 163 in what could potentially be a UFC title eliminator. Lyoto has looked good since his failed attempt to recapture the title, but Davis stands to really see his stock shoot up if he can manage an upset. Champion Jon Jones will want to keep a keen eye on this fight.

• Condit and Kampmann will be headlining the UFC’s second card on Fox Sports 1. I’m curious why the UFC is booking this fight when the Fox Sports 1 debut still doesn’t have a main event. Does that mean we are in for a surprise announcement soon? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Strap on your tinfoil hats, because it’s time to tackle some of MMA’s wildest conspiracy theories. A couple of these really surprised me, like the one about Benson Henderson being part of the Illuminati. I can’t really envision “Smooth” planning world domination while having a scotch with George Soros and the Koch brothers… but maybe that’s the whole point? O_o
