Newly retired Matt Serra thinks fans are downplaying Chris Weidman when stacked next to middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Despite the odds being against Weidman, Serra thinks he will defeat Silva.
“I absolutely believe he will be the next champ,” said Serra to Bloody Elbow. “He has a strong belief in himself and he’s very confident. If things do go right, which I think they will, he’s not just winning, he’s finishing Anderson Silva.”
If Weidman can stop Silva, it will be the first time Silva is defeated for the UFC. He currently holds 16 straight wins with 10 being title defenses. Longtime welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has a similar outcome to Serra.
They headline UFC 162 as both return for the first time this year. It’s July 6 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
Serra said he plans to continue teaching now that active competition is in his past.
