Cathal Pendred Spots Similarities Between Cage Warriors, WEC

For a little over two years, Cathal Pendred has been a member of Cage Warriors. As their current welterweight champion, Pendred sees similarities to the now defunct WEC.

“I kind of see it as what the WEC was a couple of years ago,” said Pendred on MMA Junkie Radio. “It’s got the cream of the crop in European guys, and I’m the king of that welterweight division. It’s probably the most stacked division and I’m leading the pack. I’m ready to take the next step.”

Pendred would love to follow in the footsteps of Conor McGregor, who recently made his UFC debut. At the time, McGregor held two belts for Cage Warriors and vacated them when he signed with the UFC.

McGregor took Knockout of the Night with his 67 second win over Marcus Brimage in April. UFC president Dana White said McGregor will fight on the August FOX Sports 1 event from Boston.

Cage Warriors 55 is headlined with Pendred taking on former UFC fighter Che Mills in the main event. It’s a non-title bout as Mills missed weight.
