Wrestling moved into the final round of competition to return to the Summer Olympics on Wednesday, making the final three alongside squash and baseball/softball.
The International Olympic Committee Executive Board announced the three sports would be voted on in September, with the winner joining the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Wrestling was axed earlier this year, and the support from former wrestlers and MMA fighters alike, along with fans, began growing quickly through social media and other websites.
“This is good news for wrestling, but obviously this is going to be a process,” USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender said. “The first part of the process is complete, and we’re on to the next and most important part of the process. There is a lot of work ahead, but we’re up to the challenge. The entire wrestling world needs to continue to push forward. We need to continue to work diligently and makes upgrades and changes to the sport to ensure we are successful in Buenos Aires.”
Daniel Cormier, a current UFC fighter and former Olympian, posted on Twitter “Wrestling moves on to the final stage to get put back on Olympic program. Great job! Let’s keep fighting guys.”
