The biggest injury of 2013 came a month shy of UFC 161. Interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao suffered a foot injury and had to pull out of the main event opposite Eddie Wineland.
The champ sent out a few tweets thanking everyone for the support and said he’ll be back soon.
“That’s it, guys,” wrote Barao. “Unfortunately I am out of UFC 161. But my injury is not as severe, and soon I’ll be back. I would like to thank everyone [for their] support. Thank you for caring and concern. I’ll come back even stronger. It’s a pity, because I’m dying to train. [It] is a test of my will, but it is better to recover fully as soon as possible.”
Wineland was removed from the card altogether as a result. The co-main event between Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans was promoted as the headliner.
Barao defended the belt for the first time against Michael McDonald, submitting him with a fourth round arm-triangle choke at February’s UFC on FUEL TV 7.
