Tony Johnson Jr. hasn’t seen MMA competition in nearly two years and the blame is pointed at his former employee Bellator.
“I haven’t fought since 2011 because of contract issues with Bellator who had a matching release clause and would not release me from that contract,” said Johnson to MMA Mania. “I signed to ONE FC because my manager and I heard nothing but great things about this organization and also it gives me an opportunity to do some traveling.”
Former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is currently going through the court system in regards to a contract dispute.
The one time appearance was a decision win over Derrick Lewis. At 6-1, Johnson has only lost to Daniel Cormier, who is considered a rising star in the sport.
Lewis makes his return against former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia. They are set for the preliminary card of ONE FC Rise to Power.
The show is May 31 from the SM Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines. It can be seen on their official website here.
