After a brief hiatus, the UFC is back, taking us to Brazil for UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Rockhold Saturday night.
In the main event, former UFC champion Vitor Belfort will welcome ex-Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold to the Octagon.
Vitor Belfort vs. Luke Rockhold
Dana Becker: Did Vitor Belfort finish Michael Bisping, a consensus Top-5 middleweight earlier this year? Yes. Did Belfort catch lightning in a bottle in earning that victory? I believe the answer there is also yes. Luke Rockhold is not Bisping. This is a man who worked his way up the Strikeforce ladder and became a champion. He knows what it will take to finish a fighter the caliber of Belfort. “The Phenom” will have the crowd-advantage, and that gives him a chance to do something incredible in the first couple of minutes, but that is it. This one will go to the second round where Rockhold will grind Belfort down and finish him – much like Jon Jones did last year. Luke Rockhold via second round TKO
Joseph Lisnow: Like most Vitor Belfort fights, escaping the first round can only help Luke Rockhold land the win. Belfort is going to come out of the corner with his full force as he’s not looking to make this a 25 minute contest. Rockhold could embrace this quick start as he’s able to read foes rather fast. It’s Rockhold’s UFC debut, so the jitters might get the best of him. If Belfort wins, questions about his performance will circle around his TRT usage. Win or loss, this won’t be a pretty moment on Belfort’s career. I think Belfot charges and Rockhold grabs his back to land a spot towards the top of the middleweight division.
