In the summer of 2008, Ben Askren made it to the Olympic wrestling team with two consecutive wins opposite Tyrone Lewis. He would be eliminated from the games early and didn’t qualify for any medals.
With four years until the next trials, Askren gave MMA a shot and hasn’t looked back.
“I knew I had four years until the next Olympics,” said Askren exclusively to MMA Frenzy. “I had thought about giving MMA a shot so I just decided to do a now or never kind of deal and hop right in it.”
Within a year, Askren entered Bellator’s Season 2 welterweight tournament and won. He became their welterweight champion when he defeated Lyman Good and the momentum hasn’t slowed.
Askren is 11-0 in his short MMA stint as he awaits his next challenge in Andrey Koreshkov.
