Jake Shields has no issue taking a fight with Tyron Woodley, but was expecting a welterweight a little higher in the rankings.
“I was hoping to get one of those huge names but Tyron Woodley is a respectful opponent,” said Shields on the Rick J Lee channel. “I think he’s ranked around 10 or somewhere around there. He’s coming off a big knockout. He’s certainly a worthy opponent so I can’t complain about the fight.”
Shields was thinking that the UFC would offer him Carlos Condit or Rory MacDonald. Condit’s return isn’t known and MacDonald meets Jake Ellenberger at UFC on FOX 8.
It will be Shield’s UFC return following a suspension for a banned substance in August. The substance was not made public knowledge.
Woodley is 11-1 in his career and has fought mostly for Strikeforce. His UFC debut required 36 seconds to knockout Jay Hieron.
The two fight June 15 at UFC 161. It comes from Canada’s MTS Centre.
