When Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Lyoto Machida first met for the light heavyweight title, “The Dragon” was able to remain champion in a questionable call by the judges. Two months before their rematch, Rua’s appendix erupted and his team almost called off the fight.
“I remember my team at the time did not want me to fight, wanted to postpone the fight, but I said no,” said Rua to TATAME. “I was almost a month off from training. Had to undergo surgery, but managed to finish the training camp as well and the result was great.”
The final result saw Rua take a first round win to claim the title and give Machida his first loss. He would later loss the belt to Jon Jones.
At UFC 161, Rua has a rematch with Antônio Rogério Nogueira on June 15. It’s out of the MTS Centre in Canada and is the promotion’s debut in Winnipeg.
