UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was surprised his decision to leave the U.S. for Brazil hit his bank account hard. The UFC fined “The Spider” $50,000 Monday for missing a planned media event set for today in Los Angeles.
Silva is scheduled to face Chris Weidman in July at UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman in Las Vegas. Plans were for him to promote the fight in a number of ways on Tuesday.
“I never missed any commitment with the UFC. I would never book a trip to Brazil if I knew I should be in Los Angeles,” said Silva, in an interview with Vega.com. “Everybody knows that I always block my media schedule to dedicate myself to the training sessions because it’s my priority.”
UFC president Dana White did confirm on Monday that there are no plans to further punish Silva for missing the planned events.
