Gian Villante lost a technical majority decision to Ovince St. Preux at UFC 159 in a card full of rare moments.
They entered the third round and Preux accidently poked Villante in the eye. Villante’s initial reaction to the referee was that he couldn’t see and that was enough to call the bout. Villante was unsuccessful in attempting to change the call and felt his reaction was gut instinct.
“You get poked in the eye and it’s just reaction,” said Villante to MMA Fighting. “I said, ‘ref I can’t see’ and I guess that means the fight is over. I never knew that before.”
Preux improves to 13-5 in his UFC debut following a Strikeforce stint. Villante suffered his first loss in over a year and was also coming in from the same defunct MMA promotion.
UFC 159 aired out of the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. It was this past Saturday and was headlined with Jon Jones retaining his light heavyweight championship opposite Chael Sonnen.
