UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones finished off Chael Sonnen inside of the first round, but nearly ended up on the ground himself.
Just seconds after hearing his name called as the winner and receiving his belt, Jones looked down and saw his left big toe pointing the wrong way.
“When the adrenaline calms down, I’m gonna need some pain meds tonight,” Jones said. “There’s a hole in the canvas somewhere I thought. I wasn’t planning on breaking my big toe. I was suppose to go to Jamaica after this, now I’m thinking that’s not gonna happen.”
Jones tied Tito Ortiz for the most successful title defenses of the 205-pound belt, taking him down and, in his own words, “Chael Sonnened, Chael Sonnen.”
“My coaches teach me to have a ‘Screw that attitude,'” Jones said. “You owe it to yourself to belief and fight all odds. So, I Chael Sonnened, Chael Sonnen.”
Jones was shaking several times in the interview, and seemed visibly upset by the broken toe. Before the match, he sprinted across the outside of the Octagon and offered up hugs and kisses to his mother, father and fiance.
The injury happened late in the round, and Jones told the post-fight show on FUEL TV that he believes his coaches would have twisted the toe and made him go back out because that is the “warrior mentality.”
