Jon Jones (c) vs. Chael Sonnen for the UFC light heavyweight championship
We’ve arrived at the main event. This fight has been building since last August when Chael Sonnen (27-12-1) offered to step in and face Jon Jones (17-1) on short notice. The two spent the past several months as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter, and they will meet now for the title. The referee will be Keith Peterson.
Round 1: They do offer up a touch of gloves, though Jones continued to not make eye contact. Sonnen comes running after him and throws a kick. Jones scores the first takedown just 13 seconds into the round. Sonnen gets up, avoids any punishment and lands punches inside the clinch. Exchange of knees inside the clinch from each fighter, and Sonnen is now unloading with uppercuts. Jones drops down and scores another takedown, throws a big elbow and has double underhooks in. Uppercut from Jones and an elbow, and a spinning back elbow all land. Body blows from “Bones,” who is leaving his head exposed for a possible guillotine. Massive and powerful double-leg takedown from Jones, who is proofing his wrestling prowess. Elbow slips through the defense and connects. Jones working some strong ground-and-pound, maybe deciding to use Sonnen’s own strategy against him. More big elbows and Sonnen is covering up, unleashing with 30 seconds left and the ref jumps in, as Sonnen is a bloody mess.
