UFC 159: Bryan Caraway Vs. Johnny Bedford

Bryan Caraway vs. Johnny Bedford

The lone bantamweight match this evening kicks off the FX prelims, as Bryan Caraway (17-6) steps in on less than a weeks notice to face Johnny Bedford (19-9-1). The referee will be Keith Peterson.

Round 1: Caraway catches Bedford with a left hook right away, as he replaced Erik Perez in this bout less than a week ago. Bedford, after shaking off an accidental eye poke, lands a series of rights and has Caraway backing up a bit. Another right from Bedford, who slips and allows Caraway to take his back and down to the mat. Caraway unable to lock in the choke, but moved to controlling the round with his ground work. Bedford lands a right, but Caraway finishes the round with a second takedown.

Round 2: Good exchange by these two, as they both appear to have areas to attack after the intermission. Bedford continues to try and catch him off guard with his different style of striking, but Caraway doing a fine job of defending so far. Caraway remains the more effective striker, landing his right at will. A third takedown by Miesha Tate’s boyfriend with two minutes left in the round. Caraway in side control, as Bedford’s right eye is busted open. Again, pretty much all Caraway this round, as he lands a nice elbow to the right eye area.

Round 3: Bedford likely feels he is behind 2-0, so he might be more willing to engage this round. Bedford lands a big right, but is unable to follow up with a second power shot. More swooping rights and lefts with all force by Bedford, but nothing connecting. Single-leg takedown by Caraway, but Bedford lands a switch, only to see Caraway take back control. Bedford goes from a triangle to an armbar, but Caraway spins out. Slick transitions by Bedford, as he nearly locks up another triangle. Caraway controlling the action, inside the guard and landing stiff lefts to the face. Caraway attempting a full-guard guillotine with under 30 seconds to go and he locks it up, securing the submission victory.
