Heading into UFC on FOX 7, Joseph Benavidez knew he was towards the top of the flyweight division. With his finish over Darren Uyenoyama, Benavidez is ready for another crack at champion Demetrious Johnson though is being cautious with his timing.
“I think I am the number one contender and was before the last fight,” said Benavidez to MMA Fighting. “It’s just a matter of not wanting to get back in there for a title shot so fast. I made that mistake with Dominick Cruz. If they give me a title shot, I’m always ready.”
In under a year, Cruz took two decisions over Benavidez out of the WEC. Benavidez lost in the finals to crown the first UFC flyweight champion by split-decision. He has since returned with two wins.
Uyenoyama is 2-1 for the UFC since signing with them in November 2011.
They were the only flyweights on the San Jose, CA card. Saturday’s event, from the HP Pavilion, was attended by over 13,500 fans.
Johnson is out with an injury and looks for a late August return.
