Former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson screamed with joy Saturday night, and even lifted UFC matchmaker Joe Silva high in the air, after defeating Nate Diaz.
Thomson, make his return to the UFC, stormed the former No. 1 contender, finishing him in a way he could not even dream about.
“I played it over and over in my head, and I even had myself losing a couple times too, which is never good,” said Thomson, during the post-fight show on FUEL TV. “But you have to be prepared for every scenario and I felt that I played it over and over in my head for the last eight weeks. It came out the way that I wanted it to.”
Thomson had not fought since a mid-2012 loss to Gilbert Melendez for the Strikeforce title. The decision was very close, but the veteran didn’t let it get him down.
While it was announced that the winner of Gray Maynard-TJ Grant would become the next challenger to Benson Henderson’s title, Thomson made sure to let everyone know he’s ready for that spot, as well.
“I did something the champ here couldn’t do (Henderson defeated Diaz via decision),” he stated. “I feel like I am (the No. 1 contender), but it’s not my call. I’m just asking for that one chance to fight for the UFC title and my career will be complete.”
