Whether or not Chael Sonnen talked his way into another title shot doesn’t matter as it’s official. Teammate and friend Dan Henderson thinks if Sonnen can keep Jon Jones on his back, then he has a chance to leave New Jersey as the light heavyweight champion.
“Everyone thinks Jon Jones is going to walk through him,” said Henderson on MMA Interviews. “I think Chael has a great shot at beating him. He’s going to put him on his back and it depends what he can do with it. If he can do it most of the rounds, he gets the decision.”
Henderson was to meet Jones for the belt at UFC 151, before suffering a knee injury about 10 days from the show.
Sonnen enters the fight after spending a decade as middleweight. Jones looks for a fifth title defense. Both coached on the latest The Ultimate Fighter. They meet at UFC 159 from the Prudential Center on April 27.
Henderson takes on Rashad Evans at UFC 161 from the MTS Centre in Canada. That’s June 15 as the promotion debuts in Winnipeg.
