Just minutes after defeating Gilbert Melendez, UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson found out who his next challenger will be.
UFC president Dana White announced during the post-fight press conference that the winner of Gray Maynard-TJ Grant at UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Silva II will receive the next shot.
Maynard (11-1-1) has only lost to former champion Frankie Edgar. He was expected to return to action late in 2012, but a nasty training injury to his knee knocked him out of competition.
The last time “The Bully” fought was in June, defeating Clay Guida via split decision.
Grant (20-5) has picked up four consecutive victories, including a finish of Matt Wiman earlier this year. He is unbeaten since 2010, when Ricardo Almeida defeated him via decision.
Just minutes after the announcement was made, Grant posted on Twitter “motivated.” He also remarked that the Henderson-Gilbert Melendez title fight was “very very close fight.”
