UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson capped off his third successful title defense by proposing to his girlfriend. Henderson defeated Gilbert Melendez via split decision at UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Melendez Saturday night.
Henderson (19-2) defeated Frankie Edgar and Nate Diaz last year, and earned his second consecutive win over a member of the Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu team by edging Melendez (21-3).
“This was a tough fight,” Henderson said. “We all know how tough Gilbert Melendez is. The entire Skrap Pack is tough and they bring it every single time.”
Henderson out-landed Melendez, though the decision was well in question as it was announced. The champion even looked a bit worried when he heard a 48-47 for the challenger as the first score read.
Before embarking on the usual post-fight interview, Henderson asked for a box and dropped to one knee, proposing to his girlfriend. She said yes, and he added “there are a lot bigger things than fighting. This was one of those things I had to take care of to make sure she’s in my life.”
