Frank Mir vs. Daniel Cormier

It’s time for our co-main event, as former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (16-6) welcomes ex-Olympian and winner of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, Daniel Cormier (11-0), to the Octagon. The referee will be Herb Dean.

Round 1: Two totally different looks from these men who have had some interesting trash-talk in the past few days. Several kicks from Mir get a laugh from Cormier. Knee to the body from Mir gets no reaction and Cormier ties him up against the fence. Elbow and an uppercut connect from “DC,” who just misses a big knee to the head. Cormier unloads with a combo. Knee to the body from Cormier, who is clinching and tying him up again, working the body with power shots. Another knee to the body gets a reaction from Mir and he continues to attack low. All Cormier through three minutes, as he is just picking Mir apart punch by punch. Cormier slips after attempting a kick, but Mir is unable to follow up.

Round 2: Cormier performs a standing jump kick that gets a slight grin from Mir. The corner of Mir told him to avoid the clinch game, but he finds himself right back in it with four minutes to go. No offense from Mir at all, who continues to get tied up and beat on. Standing side-kick, like Jon Jones throws, by Mir, who trained with the champion in New Mexico.

Round 3: Mir with a big kick, and fends off a takedown attempt from Cormier. However, he winds right back up against the cage and tied up. Cormier with a combo that hurts Mir, but the former champ answers back with a kick to the body. Another big kick throws Cormier up against the fence and is followed up by an elbow. Cormier clinches and works the body. The ref separates and we have two-plus minutes left, with Mir knowing only a finish can give him the victory. Another big kick from Mir, who has a bounce in his step, but gets tied up again by Cormier and thrown on the fence. One minute left and Cormier answers the ref with several rights.
