Gilbert Melendez Knows His Career Needs UFC Victory

Gilbert Melendez was known for quite a long time as the best MMA fighter in the world not competing in the UFC. He was dominating in Strikeforce, holding the lightweight title for several years.

Saturday night, “El Nino” will step on the big stage, entering the Octagon to challenge Benson Henderson for the UFC title at UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Melendez. He talked about the importance of a win in the UFC earlier this week.

“I feel like I get a lot of respect from everyone out here – from my peers and people that know what they’re talking about,” Melendez said, “but I understand how people perceive me. If I win, it legitimizes everything. If I don’t, it won’t.”

Melendez will also be trying to exact a little revenge on Henderson, who defeated his teammate, Nate Diaz, last year.

FightLine will have complete coverage of the entire fight, including pre- and post-fight breaking news. Stay tuned for all your MMA news.
