Fellow heavyweight Daniel Cormier looks at the division and thinks former Strikeforce names Josh Barnett and Antonio Silva could be ranked towards the top. Comfortably ahead of them is champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos, according to the former Olympic wrestler.
“I think anytime you start thinking about taking a step up from Josh [Barnett] or [Antonio] “Big Foot” Silva, you can only look to Cain for that position or maybe Junior dos Santos,” said Cormier to Bloody Elbow. “Really, those two are the only ones that are better than the rest of the guys in the division.”
Velasquez and Santos know each other quite well. At the first UFC on FOX event, Santos won the title early in round one. Velasquez returned the favor with a five round beating to regain the belt. They return inside the Octagon at UFC 160, this time with different opponents.
Cormier makes his UFC debut this Saturday, April, 20 at UFC on FOX 7. He takes on former champion Frank Mir in a bout that was announced for Strikeforce in the fall, but got cancelled when Mir was injured.
They are the co-main event from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.
