The suspects in the Monday bombing of the Boston Marathon that killed three have been identified, and one of them – 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed in a gun battle with law enforcement overnight – apparently had trained for a year at Wai Kru, a noted MMA gym in the Boston area.
While the remaining suspect, Tamerlan’s 19-year-old brother Dzhokhar, is still at large and the subject of a massive manhunt, authorities and the media have pieced together various clues providing insight into these Chechnyan natives’ lives, including the fact that Tamerlan was an accomplished Golden Gloves boxer who trained at the Wai Kru gym in Boston.
Here’s Deadspin with more on Tamerlan.
Here’s an online gallery of Tamerlan training.
Wai Kru has long been one of the best MMA gyms in the Boston, with their fighters racking up numerous wins in the New England fight scene. The two most well-known Wai Kru fighters are John Howard and Sean Gannon. Howard, a.k.a. “Doomsday”, went 4-3 in the UFC, and last saw Octagon action against Matt Brown in June, 2011. Gannon famously fought Kimbo Slice in an underground boxing match. Calls to the Wai Kru gym for comment went unanswered – which is understandable, since Boston and the surrounding areas are on lockdown this morning while the hunt for the remaining suspect continues.
