Nate Diaz worked his way up the ladder to a title shot in the UFC’s lightweight division last year, falling to Benson Henderson. Now, the Stockton-native appears set to switch weight classes following Saturday.
Diaz (16-8) will face Josh Thomson this weekend at UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Melendez in San Jose. He told MMAjunkie.com during a press event Thursday that welterweight could be in his future.
“I don’t think there’s anything for me at the lightweight division,” Diaz said. “I already beat everyone at lightweight or I fought everyone already. The only person who beat me was Ben, and Gil’s (Melendez) going to handle him Saturday. I’m going to sit around and fight the guys all over again? Boring. There’s no motivation in that. I’d rather fight someone new.”
Diaz went 2-2 during a brief stop at 170 pounds from 2010-11, falling to Dong Hyun Kim and Rory MacDonald. He added that the weight cut isn’t an issue, and would move unless “(the UFC has) something really cool to offer me.”
