Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir has sounded off on Brock Lesnar several times since the two first meet back in 2008. However, Mir actually had some kind remarks for his fellow ex-UFC champ recently.
Mir will return from an extended layoff to meet Daniel Cormier this Saturday night at UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Melendez.
“Honestly, I think the guy got so ill, he just couldn’t do it anymore,” said Mir, in an interview with the New York Post. “He had to leave or his quality of life wouldn’t have been normal.”
Mir was referencing Lesnar’s battle with diverticulitis, which hit him twice. He was forced to remove a large section of his colon, and had another surgery to repair his intestine.
Lesnar announced his retirement following a loss to Alistair Overeem in 2011. He lost to Mir via submission, but rebounded to stop him a few years later.
“We didn’t get to see the Brock I fought (after the illness),” Mir said. “Had he not been ill, things would have been different.”
