UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will meet in a super-fight this Saturday night in the main event of UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Melendez. The card takes place from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, and FightLine will have complete coverage from start to finish.
On Tuesday night, UFC Tonight hosts Kenny Florian and UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz offered up their selections in the champion vs. champion bout.
“Benson really needs to be careful on the inside,” said Florian, a former contender in the UFC. “Gilbert Melendez has a great knack of getting on the inside and throwing bunches of punches. He’s a high-volume striker when he gets in there, and we really haven’t seen Benson as the counter-striker.
“I think it’s going to force Benson to wrestle and it’s going to come down to who’s the better wrestler here. I pick Henderson to win this one.”
Cryz, meanwhile, seemed to agree, saying, “Gilbert Melendez has power strikes. He has the most significant strikes in Strikeforce history. He doesn’t waste movement. But I take Henderson with his pace and the way he mixes it up. Gilbert is a beast, though.”
Both also agreed that Daniel Cormier will defeat former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir in the co-main event.
