Lyoto Machida has earned a future light heavyweight title shot and doesn’t plan on letting go of it. His manager, Jorge Guimaraes, says Machida will wait for the winner of Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen. Sweden’s Alexander Gustafsson is also close to a title opportunity.
“The fight between Jones and Sonnen is going to happen now,” said Guimaraes on Fighters Only. “It doesn’t make sense to fight Alexander. We’re almost there. If it were a little before, this fight could have already happened, but he just fought and Dana White has made it clear that Lyoto is number one. We’ll be waiting.”
At UFC 157, Machida took a decision to Dan Henderson for the No. 1 contender label. In their first encounter, Jones used a choke to defend his belt against Machida in December 2011.
Jones looks for his fifth title defense at UFC 159 on April 27. It’s out of the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Gustafsson was removed from the main event of UFC on FUEL TV 9 due to a cut suffered days before the show.
