There are big fights coming up, but it seems like no one is really hyping them. This coming weekend, on UFC on FOX 7, UFC champ Benson Henderson will be defending his belt against Strikeforce king Gilbert Melendez, while Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier will be taking on former UFC champ Frank Mir. That’s a big deal, no? And then there’s the Jon Jones/Chael Sonnen bout scheduled for UFC 159 the week after – where’s the hype for that? I don’t know about you, but I get the feeling Ronda Rousey and Georges St. Pierre used up all the excitement, and now fans are left lying in bed smoking cigarettes and wondering if there are any leftovers in the refrigerator. Here’s your news:
• Maybe you saw her on a Bellator undercard recently, or maybe you missed her, but boxer Holly Holm has announced that she’s hanging up the 14-ounces gloves and using only the four-ounce ones (i.e., she’s giving up pro boxing for MMA competition). This isn’t so much a big deal because of who she may or may not fight down the line as it’s a statement on the two sports in general. Female MMA has got a huge upside going for it now; female boxing, not so much.
