The tryouts for the eighteenth season of the Ultimate Fighter were in Las Vegas, and unless you suffer from severe memory-retention issues, it should come as no shock to know that for the first-ever co-ed season of the reality show there were a sea of would-be contestants of both genders. I have personally covered two different TUF tryouts –for TUF 2 and for TUF 14 – and know from experience the sense of hope mixed with camaraderie at these things, as well as the acrid scent of smashed dreams. I imagine these things are what auditions for major Broadway musicals are like, albeit with a lot more grappling and hitting focus mitts. Anyway, here’s your news:
• You know what’s crazy at TUF tryouts? All the MMA veterans that show up and try out. This wasn’t so much of a thing at the TUF 2 tryouts, but for the past few years you might have seen WEC, IFL and Strikeforce veterans in the starry-eyed mix, and that’s just crazy. As per MMAJunkie, the TUF 18 tryouts had its vets – although these vets were ACTUAL WOMEN’S MMA PIONEERS. Seriously, at one time Tara LaRosa was the best female fighter in the world. How in the hell does she have to try out for a reality show?
• Hey, here’s Cat Zingano, rapping about whatever. Get to know her, people. She’s going to be a fixture in women’s MMA for a while.
• Former Strikeforce champ Josh Thomson is returning to the UFC since forever this Saturday. Here he is talking to MMAMania.
• SpikeTV Main Dude Kevin Kay did an interview with Sherdog and they talked about Bellator. This is another worthwhile read.
